Training the trainer - on two continents

Joan Thomas has worked in Cancer Care for the past 30 years, the first 20 odd in the UK, and the last nine years here in Australia. She has been involved in the development of projects that have been successful in influencing cancer care across the world and has presented both here and at international conferences on the 24 Hour Triage Toolkit, and Sexuality and Intimacy in cancer care

Joan was a part of the Greater Midlands Cancer Network Senior Nursing Team in the UK that worked with the United Kingdom Oncology Nursing Society (UKONS) to develop the Oncology / Haematology 24 Hour Triage Rapid Assessment and Access Tool Kit, and she also collaborated with an Australian working party for the implementation of the tools. Joan has implemented the toolkit in two units, one in the UK and one in Australia.

Joan’s next venture is adapting the UKONS Acute oncology initial management guidelines for use in Australia.

Train the trainer, workshop & focus groups

Participants from all 5 states (warm bodies & ethereal ones) joined us last week for our 24 hour triage toolkit workshop and eviQ Education focus groups. A big THANK YOU to everyone who attended, got involved and hopefully had some fun on the day.

Triage toolkit presentation

The toolkit presentation, delivered by Joan Thomas, focused on the importance of using the log sheet along with the toolkit and having experienced oncology staff answering calls.

The toolkit case-studies workshop

Each group used the toolkit to work on different presenting scenarios. They then delivered their assessment findings to the group. The session finished with a short Q & A.

The panel Q & A

Implementing the Toolkit panel members were introduced and their tips shared. The Q & A session centred on lessons learned re toolkit implementation.

Translated Patient Information titles

Seven patient information sheets, covering general cancer treatment information and side effect management, have now been translated into nine different languages—Arabic, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, French, Greek, Italian, Korean, Spanish and Vietnamese. The patient sheet 'Understanding chemotherapy' has also been translated into Macedonian and Thai.

FAQ

“Can the system keep track of my progress and issue certificates?​”

A: It depends :)  The eviQ Education website is a standard website. It provides access to all resources, but has no functionality to track or record completions or progress. A facility’s Learning Management System (LMS) is an education application that can track your training records, progress and completion. Organisation Facilitators select their LMS resources.
