This module provides an overview of the importance of physical activity for children living with cancer. It highlights different activity types and recommended dosage and the factors that affect a child’s ability to engage in physical activity.

This module was developed by the Paediatric Integrated Cancer Service (PICS) with input from the Children’s Cancer Centre at The Royal Children’s Hospital.

What you will achieve

  • Define physical activity and give examples of what is considered physical activity.
  • Explain why physical activity is important for children with cancer.
  • Describe the factors that can affect a child’s physical activity when they have cancer.
  • Identify ideas to incorporate physical activity into clinical care and daily routines.
  • Identify safety considerations.
  • Identify when to refer to physiotherapy for assessment and treatment.

Who is this course for?

This course is developed for nursing staff new to the specialty of paediatric oncology and patients and families of children receiving chemotherapy.
